- What is silkscreen or Legend Printing?Silkscreen is actually a process of screening ink using a stencil prepared by lithographic method. Purpose of this is to apply a nomenclature to aid in assembly. It is those little white labeling of component that makes manual assembly significantly easier. Although not an absolutely needed feature, it is nice to have when you have hundreds of holes to figure out which component goes where.
- Which legend printing technology do you use?For prototype and small volume PCBs, we use PILP (Photo Imageable Legend Printing) technology, which is quite expensive but offers excellent quality printing with high locational accuracy. For large volume PCBs, we use standard screen printing technology.
- Can I have different color than white for my component silkscreen print?Yes. Apart from white, you can have silkscreen in black and yellow colour as well.
- What is silkscreen fix?In order to print legible silkscreen, your PCB design should not contain line width less than 6 mils, otherwise we will have to increase the line width little bit at our end for an efficient printing.
- What does "clipping" mean in silkscreen printing process? To avoid problem during electrical testing, we prefer no overlay ink to fall within the range of 0.1mm from the respective solder mask pad. If your design violates this rule then we will have to clip area of silkscreen that fall inside the 0.1mm periphery. This process is called “clipping”.
PCB Design Tips
When designing a PCB, try to limit
the amount of draws you use.
Draws use a lot of memory and slows the programming time. Ex.: Use a flash for pads instead of draws. If for some reason we need to increase or decrease that pad size, it can easily be done by changing the D-code but if they are done with draws it could be a nightmare.
